Mullen also contributed to the year-long series of Olympic countdown broadcasts for NBC's " Today" and "Nightly News." His August 8 live stand-up from Tiananmen Square was the first live broadcast from the square since the Chinese government crackdown on student demonstrators in 1989. Mark Mullen is an American Emmy Award-winning journalist working for NBC7 San Diego serving as an anchor. In 1997, he was made anchor of the national ABC overnight newscast World News Now. Mullen moved to KDFW in Dallas in 1989, and KRON in San Francisco in 1991. the regional ABC affiliate covering the Gulf Coast. His first job was as an anchor and reporter for WLOX-TV in Mississippi. Mullen attended Loyola University in New Orleans from 1981 to 1987, where he majored in journalism and Spanish. Similarly, college graduates are a less rarified group today than they were.
